In this logic, the orangutans' home is redefined as 'undeveloped resource,' a definition held by the masculine-centric power structures that dictate land policy.
The most cynical game here is that humans are attempting to 'understand' orangutans through a 'unique' database. We quantify their births, reproduction, and aging, turning lives into data. But as the fire line closes in, this understanding is pathetic. The walls of a research station might stop the flames, but they cannot stop ecological collapse. If the forest vanishes, we are left with a building that archives extinction—a form of meta-violence where we soothe our collective conscience by 'studying' what we are destroying.
While volunteers fight in the mud to reduce the gap between Potential and Actual in a local spot, they are fighting a global complicity of capital. When a species' existence is reduced to a dataset while its fate is decided by land-ownership gambles in distant offices, this 'scientific care' is nothing more than a desperate performance in the face of structural violence.
