Excrement, Gold Medals, and the Forgotten Biological Wall
While the world discusses the 'embarrassment' of an elite athlete soiling themselves, the public instinctively categorizes it as a random accident or a dietary slip-up. But stripping away these a-political medical explanations reveals a brutal game of physical limits. In the narrative of elite sports, the body is reduced to a machine optimized for efficiency; any physiological response that doesn't translate into speed or power—including excretion—is treated as a 'malfunction' to be overcome.
Interestingly, the report exposes a long-ignored structural violence: female athletes face a higher Biological Wall in this game. For male athletes, incontinence is often attributed to a 'bad peach' or 'caffeine'—a random external interference. For women, it is bound to pelvic floor dysfunction, childbirth, menstruation, and menopause. This means women must pay an additional 'tax' determined by biological structure while pursuing the same competitive heights.
This disparity is further flattened at the cultural level. Despite the higher risk, the 'optimal expression' in sports remains the cold "Go hard or go home." When female athletes like Wietrzyk face incontinence with nonchalance and win, it looks like a victory of subjectivity, but it is actually the internalization of a masculine-centric competitive logic: as long as you win, bodily dignity and physiological collapse are mere collateral damage.
Just Expressions would not be encouraging athletes to sprint through bodily breakdown, but acknowledging the Biological Wall and moving research and medical resources tailored to female physiology from a 'Wild West' fringe to the core agenda of elite sports.
