Patching House Prices with Taxpayer Money is Not 'Value for Money'

Housing subsidies are essentially a complicity between government and developers to prop up inflated prices.

Rachel Reeves

The most repulsive part of this audit is its definition of 'value': how many people managed to buy a home. This is a systemic scam. When a system injects capital into buyers to maintain a distorted price ceiling, it doesn't create 'social value'; it enacts structural violence against every potential buyer in the market.

The logic of Help-to-Buy is transparent: government subsidies $\rightarrow$ increased buyer purchasing power $\rightarrow$ developers bake the subsidy into the asking price $\rightarrow$ house prices soar. The result? The housing ladder becomes even steeper. The report boasts that some could 'skip a rung' to buy larger homes, which is just a polite way of saying the scheme rewards those already privileged while raising the entry fee for the truly marginalized.

This is a textbook case of complicity. The government needs the political metric of 'home ownership' to appease young voters, while developers need state backing to ensure their bubble doesn't burst. Together, they weaponize the narrative that owning a home is the only valid state of existence, masking a structural failure in housing supply.

Rachel Reeves' insistence on boosting supply over subsidies is the only rational path. Any attempt to 'throw money' at house prices is just adding fuel to the fire. When you try to solve a supply shortage by stimulating demand, the only outcome is asset inflation for the owners and further existential erasure for those left behind.
