This "double standard" is standard operating procedure for complicity in rule-based gaming: when a rival's capital threatens your survival, you suddenly declare their behavior a "crisis" and attempt to rewrite the rules to handicap them. This isn't about saving democracy; it's about fighting over who defines the boundaries of "legal donations."
The crisis of democracy isn't the amount of money, but the fact that politics has become a derivative of capital. When a party's survival depends on the whims of a few billionaires, its expression is no longer the will of the voters, but the optimal expression of the financiers.
