Habibi City and the Collapse of American Exceptionalism
This article reveals a fascinating game: a new generation of SWANA immigrants in New York is reclaiming their existence by seizing the cognitive entrances of power. They are no longer content playing the role of the 'diligent alien' in halal carts; they are infiltrating SNL, fine dining, and political seats. In my framework, this is Actual moving toward Potential—the gap of structural violence is shrinking.
The most compelling part is the weaponisation of identity. The US right attempts to lock Muslims into the 'enemy' label using the 9/11 narrative—a classic form of cultural violence designed to maintain the legitimacy of American Exceptionalism via an 'us vs them' dichotomy. Ironically, this systemic Islamophobia became a biological wall and a basis for alliance for these youths. As Ramy Youssef noted, being told 'it was your fault' forcibly activated their religious and political identities. They transformed a passive attribute into a sharp tool of identity politics.
When figures like Zohran Mamdani emerge, they aren't just representatives; they are holders of the power of interpretation. By daring to deconstruct the narrative of 'American glory' and pointing out the calamities of the 'war on terror,' they are actively eroding the meta-violence of US-centric narratives. The right is furious because the 'romantic' narrative of patriotism is failing, replaced by a cosmopolitan perspective that redefines the 'American story' from the margins.
But let's not be naive. Mamdani's handshake with Giuliani may look like a cultural victory, but it is still a performance of seeking recognition within a ceremony defined by the oppressor. True victory isn't being 'allowed' to attend a memorial; it is the total obsolescence of the mechanism that defines who is a 'threat.' This war has only just entered the stage of fighting for the cognitive entrance.
