Punk as a Priced Scam: Legs McNeil, the Ultimate Co-conspirator
Legs McNeil's story is a textbook case of the weaponisation of expression. The most critical point isn't the booze or the benders, but his own admission of success: putting Punk into a "narrative that people could understand." This is a blatant hijack of the cognitive entry point. Punk was originally a chaotic, purposeless expression of marginal identities, but McNeil and his peers standardised and storied it, thereby seizing the power of definition. Once that power was held, this "rebellion" became a consumable product.
Interestingly, Legs still identifies as a "fuck-up," which is precisely his most precise optimal expression. In the punk ethos, failure, crudeness, and illiteracy are not flaws but medals of identity. By performing the role of the "perfect loser," he acquired social currency and directly converted it into sexual resources—"I could get laid every night of the week!" This is essentially a game in the existential war: he discovered that playing a role defined as a "loser" by patriarchal society actually yielded the highest value of votes within a specific cultural sub-group.
Yet, the most jarring part of the interview is his posture toward women. Whether it's his critique of Patti Smith or the anecdote about Sinéad O’Connor being laughed at in a Harlem barbershop, his narrative logic remains masculine-centric. Women in his memory are either footnotes to his social success or objects to be "led" or "observed." Even while claiming to live on the edge of rebellion, he remains a loyal co-conspirator of meta-violence, enjoying the dividends of the masculine-centric narrative's interpretive power while spitting on his former comrades.
