Patriotism as a Skin for Racial Violence
On the streets of Portsmouth, men in 'patriot' branded clothing shout 'stop the boats.' This is not merely a protest against immigration, but a textbook case of the weaponisation of expression. By defining asylum seekers as 'invaders,' they successfully package structural violence—the deprivation of the right to survive—as a sacred form of 'patriotism.' This narrative entry point is highly efficient: it allows the aggressors to believe they are serving justice, psychologically neutralizing the discomfort of committing violence.
There is a sharp irony in the masked protesters. The face covering here is not for privacy, but an expression of terrorism—creating a 'fear factor' through the erasure of identity, which is a rehearsal for direct violence. While the police emphasize the 'impartial' enforcement of laws requiring uncovered faces, this is an attempt to counter the terror narrative at the structural level. But the real question is: why does the power to define 'patriotism' always reside with those who seek to confirm their 'masculine' dominance by excluding others?
At its core, this is an existential war over who constitutes the 'Primal Race.' Far-right activists attempt to rebuild a masculine-centric hierarchy by defining a 'pure indigenous identity.' In this order, refugees are not just foreigners, but 'objects' stripped of their subjectivity. When 'protection' becomes the entry point for control, this so-called patriotism is a scam, masking primal racial hatred with a fake sense of collective honor. As long as this meta-violence narrative of 'Us vs Them' remains unchallenged, the Violence Triangle remains intact, regardless of how many masked men are arrested.
