环保皮革:一场关于“替代”的叙事 scamAlternative Leather: A Narrative Scam of Sustainability

Masking plastic as nature is a capitalistic illusion manufactured at the cognitive entry point.

The concept of "vegan leather" is a textbook example of weaponized expression. By seizing the cognitive entry point of "sustainability," capital has rebranded PU and PVC—fossil fuel derivatives—as "animal-friendly alternatives," allowing consumers to feel a sense of moral superiority while buying plastic. This is a cognitive scam: using a trendy label (vegan) to mask structural violence—specifically, the reliance on fossil fuels and the permanent ecological destruction caused by microplastics.

In this game, so-called "innovative materials" like apple or pineapple leather are mostly just "sandwiches" of plant fibers and plastics. Commercially, they are framed as "alternatives," but in the Galtung formula of Potential − Actual, they fail to reduce environmental harm. Instead, they expand the portfolio to drive more consumption. These materials aren't true alternatives; they are just stories used to sell more stuff.

The real violence lies in shifting the conversation from "reducing consumption" to "changing materials." It tricks people into believing they can achieve sustainability without altering their lifestyle. This is a fake optimal expression: it provides a shortcut that bypasses the need for subjective reflection, while genuine environmental restoration—such as regenerative farming—is marginalized because it doesn't fit the fast-fashion business model.

When an industry habitually redefines reality to cover its lack of capability, it exercises meta-violence. It defines what "eco-friendly" means, thereby stripping the public of the right to discuss "durability" and "circularity." A real leather product that lasts decades and can be repaired is branded as "cruel," while a plastic bag that cracks in two years and cannot be recycled is branded as "civilized." This monopoly over the power of interpretation leads people to worship their own chains while comfortably participating in the planet's self-destruction.
