Immersive Experiences: Gilding Ruins with XR Glasses
Venice Immersive places the ruins of the West Bank alongside 17th-century Amsterdam in the same exhibition. This juxtaposition is a blatant weaponization of expression. Under the filter of XR glasses, communities erased by settler violence are transformed into 'digitally preserved' 360-degree documentaries, while the trade hubs of the colonial era become 'delightful' historical tours. This so-called 'immersion' is essentially gilding structural violence with a digital veneer, allowing visitors on a comfortable Venetian island to consume others' despair as a form of 'electronic tourism.'
The self-satisfaction of the creators is the most ironic part. Some claim this technology is an advocacy tool because it can be shown to World Bank or UN officials. This is classic meta-violence: the survival of the victim must be processed into a digitally polished product that fits elite aesthetics and possesses 'impact' to earn the fleeting attention of the power class. This narrative of 'quality over quantity' effectively surrenders the subjecthood of the victims to those who hold the power of interpretation—suffering only gains the value of being 'saved' when it is 'correctly' digitized.
As technology folds reality like origami, converting raw blood and despair into a 'Lynchian nightmare' or 'astounding' visual art, it completes an efficient cleansing at the cultural layer. The moment a visitor removes the glasses, they feel not anger toward violence, but a sense of superiority for having participated in 'cutting-edge art.' This is the most insidious aspect of technological complicity: it makes you believe you are witnessing reality, while it uses a high-resolution illusion to mask the massive gap of violence between Potential and Actual.
