Red-Light Therapy and American Football: Patching the Sacrificed Brain

Using tech to hedge structural violence is a classic 'patch-style' existential game.

This report reads like a medical miracle, but through the lens of the Violence Triangle, it reveals a brutal structural violence. American football is a system that legitimizes head impacts to trade neurological health for entertainment and profit. Players are encouraged to collide like missiles, a process wrapped in cultural narratives of 'toughness' and 'glory,' while their nervous systems are treated as consumables.

Now, we see itPBM framed as 'redemption' for those facing the cognitive collapse and violence of CTE. But the logic of its application is telling: the BYU coach explicitly mentions 'competitive advantage' in reaction time and executive control. This means the tech isn't just treating victims; it's being used to help them survive more efficiently within a violent system, effectively extending their 'service life.'

This is a 'patch-style' game. The system has no intention of altering the root cause—the impacts themselves—but instead provides a high-tech patch to maintain basic function while being destroyed. For the individual, this is a good_news because it reduces the gap between Actual and Potential. For the system, however, it makes structural violence more invisible; if there's a patch, the cost of the impact is offset, justifying the status quo.

The irony is that this 'maintenance' of the brain is ultimately about keeping players on the field or allowing them to barely function as salesmen after retirement. When we obsess over technical details like whether light can penetrate the skull, we fall into the trap of meta-violence: we discuss how to fix the broken, while ignoring who broke them and why it was considered acceptable.
