In the Colosseum of the Thumb, Literature Becomes the Last Sanctuary

When expression is reduced to binary likes or dislikes, profundity becomes a luxury of levity.

Salman Rushdie’s metaphor in *The Eleventh Hour* is scathing: we have all become gladiators in the "Colosseum of the Thumb." This is more than a critique of cancel culture; it is a diagnostic of the current state of expression. In the cognitive gateways driven by algorithms, complex narratives are dissected into binary judgments—thumbs up or down, support or boycott. This weaponized logic of expression essentially erases the diversity of subjectivity, reducing all existential wars to a vote for "correctness."

For a writer whose body was physically reshaped by direct violence in 2022, choosing levity to confront bleak themes like mortality and loneliness is a brilliant optimal expression. When direct violence attempts to silence an expresser by destroying the flesh, using lightness to dissolve heaviness is the most potent counterattack. He refuses the victim narrative, reclaiming the power of interpretation over his own existence through literature.

Yet, it is unsettling that such profound humor is becoming a "sanctuary" rather than a "weapon." As the mainstream narrative is monopolized by meta-violence and public spaces are filled with polarized ideological packages, the space for literature—where complex empathy and contradictions coexist—is shrinking. We are trained to perform as moral judges on screens, forgetting that life, as the book suggests, is simply a matter of death and life being "adjacent verandas."
