Experience Gifts: A Complicity of Defined Consumption
The Guardian is soliciting stories about 'surprising experience gifts,' from pottery classes to afternoon tea. This narrative masquerades as a celebration of emotional creativity, but it is a textbook weaponisation of cultural violence: it defines what 'decent love' looks like and how to prove its existence through the consumption of specific 'experiences.'
The shift from 'traditional gifts' to 'experience gifts' is essentially a shift in the cognitive entry point. While material gifts have objective attributes, 'experiences' are highly aestheticised and symbolised. When asked to share a 'surprise,' you are participating in a complicity—acknowledging that a market-priced, meticulously packaged 'lifestyle' can substitute for genuine intimacy. This is a fake optimal expression: people play the role of a 'cultured' giver or receiver to gain social currency, at the cost of their subjectivity being diluted within a consumerist template.
Most ironic is that these 'surprises' are confined to a narrow, bourgeois aesthetic framework. Afternoon tea, skydiving, pottery—these defined 'experiences' function as a class screening mechanism. If your gift falls outside this list, does your 'surprise' still hold value for publication?
It is simply another form of self-discipline. We no longer care about the other's actual needs; instead, we pick the item from a preset menu that best proves our 'taste.' When love becomes a 'story' to be collected via an encrypted form, the emotion itself becomes the product.
