The National Theatre's 'Diversity' Shield and the Cycle of Masculine Power

Using marginal narratives as ornaments to build a monument for masculine power history.

The National Theatre's new season is a textbook performance of cultural violence. It attempts to construct a progressive facade with a checklist of 'Arab Spring', 'South African unity', and 'Caribbean LGBTQ+' stories, but the moment you look at the absolute protagonist positioned at the center—the rise of John Major—the scam is revealed.

This play explores how an obscure whip becomes Prime Minister, centering on the definition of 'leadership' during political upheaval. Note that this 'leadership' is still locked within a masculine-centric narrative: how power is acquired, gambled, and inherited. Even as director Indhu Rubasingham claims to examine 'cultures and conflicts that shape our world,' the core resources—main stage scheduling and narrative weight—remain allocated to the power games of men.

This structure is insidious. By placing a few 'minority' plays on the periphery, it achieves a form of complicity labeled as 'inclusivity.' It tricks the audience into believing that because we are discussing race and gender, it is 'just' to continue glorifying masculine power struggles as a universal human experience. This is the weaponisation of cognitive entry points: using a sliver of diversity as a shield to hide the fact that the institution still serves Meta-violence.

The irony is that they purged Shakespeare to signal 'modernity' and 'boldness,' yet they failed to purge the most stubborn ghost of all: masculine-centrism. As long as the power to define 'leadership' remains in scripts about how Prime Ministers rise, this so-called 'international spirit' is nothing more than a cheap multicultural cloak draped over old power.
