The Romance of Wilderness as a Colonial Entry Point
这本质上是一次认知层面的 weaponization(武器化)。
This piece reads like a typical middle-class spiritual cleanse: Gore-Tex jackets, glacial water, and a quest for 'purity' at the edge of the Arctic Circle. The author attempts a superficial reflection on the term 'wilderness,' acknowledging that the land has been shaped by the Sami people for millennia. However, this reflection is cheap, wrapped in a dangerous romantic narrative of nature and far-off lands.
The most ironic detail is the Alkavare chapel. While praising its beauty, the author mentions in passing that the chapel was a tool for 'forced Christianisation' and the 'eradication' of Sami shamanistic beliefs in the 18th century. In Galtung's Violence Triangle, this is a textbook example of cultural violence legitimizing structural violence. What was once forced brainwashing and colonial erasure has become, centuries later, a 'spiritual landmark' for modern hikers.
This is the 'spectacularization' of colonial history. When the author describes this as 'Europe’s wildest pilgrimage route,' he is consuming the scars of a race whose subjectivity was forcibly stripped away. For the Sami, every stone may record the pain of colonization, but in a tourism narrative where the cognitive entry points are controlled, this pain is filtered into 'cultural value' and 'World Heritage.'
Essentially, this is the weaponisation of expression. By packaging colonial ruins as 'wilderness exploration' and 'pilgrimage,' the original meta-violence is diluted into an exotic aesthetic experience. When the blood and tears of one group's land are defined as another's 'adventure playground,' the expression itself becomes a form of enduring violence.
