Labour selecting Sagal Abdi-Wali, a former child refugee, to succeed Starmer's seat is framed as a 'victory of hope' in PR narratives. In the logic of existential war, however, this is a precise piece of identity feeding. Labour is using a specific female body with a 'redeemed' narrative to offset the legitimacy they've lost among left-wing voters. This is a classic weaponisation of expression: it avoids discussing systemic resource allocation and instead focuses on 'gratitude' and 'giving back.'
Abdi-Wali's narrative is a textbook alienation of the optimal expression. She must emphasize how this place 'welcomed' her family and define her political origin through 'gratitude.' In this narrative, her subjectivity is reduced to a successful sample of 'systemic tolerance.' When one's existence is defined as a result of the system's mercy, they become the system's most effective complicity—because they must maintain the very structure that granted them opportunity, even as that structure continues to produce new refugees at a structural level.
Meanwhile, the racist attacks from Reform UK are a direct manifestation of meta-violence. They attempt to seize the power of interpretation by defining 'who is not British.' Interestingly, this right-wing direct violence strips away Labour's veneer: a female refugee's value in the political arena is either as a 'threat of invasion' for the right or a 'diversity window-dressing' for the left. In both cases, she remains a gazed-upon object, not a subject who defines the rules.
The illusion of this 'good news' is that it leads us to believe a member of the Primal Race entering the center of power is a victory. But if the price of entry is playing the 'grateful survivor,' it is merely structural violence in a more civilized skin. Real victory is not having one refugee become an MP, but ensuring the 'refugee' label is no longer the only ticket into the political space.
