Shark 'Citizen Science' and the Inversion of Complicity

When the predator's chroniclers become its protectors, structural violence shifts at the cognitive entry point.

长期以来,英国海域的鲨鱼处于一种 Potential(本应存在的生态位)与 Actual(被过度捕捞的现状)的巨大差额中。

At first glance, this is a heartwarming environmental story. But applying Galtung's Violence Triangle reveals a fascinating experiment in reducing structural violence. For years, sharks in British waters have existed in a massive gap between their Potential (ecological niche) and Actual (overfished reality). The architects of this gap were the anglers themselves.

The most intriguing part is the project's mechanism: researchers aren't fighting the anglers; they are converting these former 'perpetrators' into 'citizen scientists.' This is essentially a game played at the cognitive entry point. By leveraging the Pat Smith Database, researchers transform the angler's desire for possession into a contribution of data, allowing them to find a new identity as 'protectors.' This shift in expression changes the optimal solution of the game: anglers no longer prove their prowess by killing sharks, but by recording and releasing them to prove they are 'conservation-conscious.'

However, we must be wary of the complicity within this 'good news.' Garzon mentions that anglers are sometimes ostracised yet remain passionate. Is this passion a compensatory narrative? Defining 'catch-and-release' as protection essentially puts a civilized label on an invasive act. If the tags reveal that catch-and-release still results in high mortality, this 'citizen science' becomes a massive PR scam, providing a legitimate shell for amateur hunting under the guise of research.

The genuine good_news would be if this research translates DNA mapping and path tracking directly into legislation for no-take zones—a change at the structural layer. Otherwise, it is merely a repair at the cultural layer—making us feel we coexist peacefully with sharks, while the sharks silently endure a cycle of being tagged, hooked, and released.
