Giuliani's 'Offense' and the Inheritance of Meta-Violence
Giuliani's performance on Newsmax is a textbook deployment of cultural violence. By forcibly linking Mayor Mamdani's Muslim faith to the 9/11 hijackers, he attempts to seize the interpretative power over the 'memorial' as a cognitive entry point. In his worldview, the entry ticket to this ceremony is not the mourning of the dead, but a 'purity' of identity defined by him. This logic is vile: it equates a person's faith with inherent hostility, marking Mamdani as the other.
This is meta-violence in action. Giuliani represents a typical masculine-centric narrative—he doesn't just monopolise power; he seeks to monopolise the definition of 'who is allowed to grieve.' His claim that it 'offends me' is a declaration of power: in this narrative, the offense felt by a white male outweighs the legitimate existence of a Muslim mayor. Such narratives justify structural discrimination by dehumanising or antagonising specific groups.
Mamdani's response is an existential game. He avoids the emotional trap, instead using executive orders to redefine 9/11 as a 'Day of Remembrance and Service.' He is attempting to shift the cognitive entry point from 'hate and exclusion' toward 'public service and shared mourning,' replacing weaponised hatred with Just Expressions.
Yet, the cruelty of this game lies in the scale of the complicity, evidenced by the 100,000 signatures. Many subconsciously accept Giuliani's logic, believing a Muslim's presence is a 'desecration.' This complicity transforms individual fear of terrorism into structural violence against a race. As long as this meta-violence—where 'identity equals guilt'—remains, any mayor from that background will forever face the double siege of the biological wall and the cultural wall.
