Flags, Patriotism, and the Shield of Violence

Defining 'patriotism' as a cognitive entry point is simply creating a cultural shield for direct violence.

Ryan Bridge and his 'Raise the Colours' group have executed a textbook case of weaponized expression. By rebranding the Union Jack and St George’s flags as entry points for 'unity and patriotism,' they attempted to hijack the narrative of national identity. Under the logic of meta-violence, once you seize the definition of 'patriotism,' any subsequent xenophobia, harassment, or assault can be repackaged as a defense of a 'pure' nation.

This narrative is insidious because it creates a cultural mask: it transforms direct violence into a ritual of 'awakening.' Nigel Farage’s praise—claiming Bridge 'woke up vast parts of this country'—is a classic posture of complicity. Political elites, by endorsing this grassroots aggression, legitimize racial harassment, making it look not like violence, but like a 'necessary patriotic expression.'

However, the law and the evidence—witness accounts and footage—have stripped away this shield. The 14 charges, including racially aggravated harassment and assault, prove that the actual optimal expression of this 'patriotism' was never unity, but the establishment of dominance through fear and racial hierarchy. When a flag is used to mark territory and threaten others, it ceases to be a symbol and becomes a prelude to direct violence.

The irony of this game is that Bridge tried to gain social and political capital by playing the role of a 'patriotic hero'—a fake optimal expression that eventually collapsed under the structural violence of legal sanctions. Yet, as long as the cognitive entry point linking 'patriotism' to 'exclusion' remains open, another Ryan Bridge will emerge, because this narrative remains a highly efficient weapon for many complicitors.
