The same owners who saw team valuations double by legalizing sports betting and squeezing more labor out of players (the push for an 18-game season). When 'success' is defined as revenue jumping from $8 billion to $25 billion, Goodell becomes the perfect executor of the system.
This is how meta violence operates: using a veneer of 'rationality,' 'professionalism,' and 'objectivity' to mask inherent predation. Goodell's salary may exceed that of the highest-paid players in the league he presides over, yet his 'performance' is achieved by further exploiting the biological walls—the muscles, joints, and nervous systems—of those very players. The players' bodies are consumables; Goodell's contract is an asset.
The most cynical part is that this extension coincides with the expiration of the CBA. This means in the upcoming existential war, players aren't facing an objective administrator, but a co-conspirator who has already delivered the 'pledge of loyalty' to the owners. In the face of such structural violence, the players' 'bargaining power' is nothing more than a performance permitted by the power elite.
