The 'Customization' Scam and the Death of Subjectivity

When 'customizable' becomes the standard, expression becomes a docile dissolution of the original.

A quinoa and broccoli salad recipe from the NYT has devolved into a collective carnival of 'modifications' in the comments. Some swap quinoa for barley, some roast the broccoli, others replace cranberries with apricots. This flexibility, praised as 'customizable,' is essentially a trap of the cognitive entry point: it encourages a delusion of control through minor tweaks, while you are actually just performing low-cost substitutions within a pre-defined frame.

In the existential war, true expression should be a challenge to the established power of definition, not a checkbox exercise on a provided menu. Those in the comments who believe they are 'optimizing' the recipe are, in fact, engaging in a form of complicity. By playing the role of the 'tasteful modifier,' they gain short-term psychological satisfaction at the cost of the death of subjectivity—they no longer question the necessity of the salad, but subconsciously accept the meta-premise that 'the base recipe is perfect.'

The most ironic part is the phrase 'the recipe police won't come to your house and arrest you.' This flippant humor masks a cultural violence: it presupposes the existence of an authoritative 'standard,' and defines all your attempts as 'permitted deviations.' When one becomes accustomed to seeking an optimal expression within defined boundaries, they lose the ability to define reality. This isn't just about salad; it's about how we surrender our power of interpretation within this fed 'freedom.'
