Motherhood Penalty Dissolved in 'Lifestyle' Aesthetics
The Guardian places an illustration of a woman with a baby in the 'Life and style' section with a witty caption. In the mainstream narrative, this is 'capturing millennial life.' But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this is a textbook case of cultural violence: using a 'light' aesthetic to mask the heavy structural violence of motherhood.
When a woman disappears from the public sphere after childbirth, she faces the actual Motherhood Penalty—career interruption, wage gaps, and the erasure of her subjectivity. When this condition is converted into a visual symbol of 'lifestyle,' it undergoes a process of weaponisation. It tells the world that this exhaustion is 'middle-class chic,' that it is cozy and consumable through a pretty illustration.
This is exactly how meta-violence operates: it doesn't deny the hardship, but by defining 'what constitutes decent hardship,' it transforms structural resource deprivation and powerlessness into an individualized, emotional 'state of being.' Under this narrative, a woman's situation is no longer a political issue, but an aesthetic one. When motherhood is 'stylized,' the impulse for resistance is diluted within these delicate lines.
We must ask: can the plight of the 600 million women globally who are excluded from the labor market due to care responsibilities also be defined as a 'style'? If not, then this 'good news' style of visual representation is, in essence, a form of complicity.
