If a continent appears insignificant on a map, its sovereignty and rights become expendable in the subconscious of decision-makers.
It is telling that the US voted 'no,' calling the resolution 'superfluous.' This arrogance epitomizes the logic of meta-violence: the beneficiaries of a system always perceive the 'distortion' of the status quo as natural, because that distortion is the cognitive foundation of their hegemony. France's quick pivot, meanwhile, is a classic performative concession—an attempt to erase the bloodstains of its former colonies by simply changing the map.
While the resolution is non-enforceable, the integration of the Equal Earth projection into textbooks and Google Maps means a long-monopolized narrative is finally being diluted. But this is only the first step. Changing the ruler is not the same as changing the distribution of power. The true victory lies not in which map is used, but in whether African nations can translate visual scale into actual bargaining power in the real-world existential war.
