The Sheet-Pan Narrative and the Outsourcing of Domestic Labor

Convenience recipes are a form of cultural violence: simplifying the result while masking the structural distribution of labor.

This typical NYT 'Sheet-Pan' recipe presents a lifestyle of 'efficiency, health, and simplicity,' but it is essentially using cultural violence to redefine the threshold of a 'family dinner.' The 'one-pan' narrative flattens the actual labor—washing, trimming, chopping, and cleaning—into a streamlined entrance of convenience. It suggests that as long as you have an oven and the right ingredients, you can achieve a certain middle-class 'effortlessness.'

But we must ask: for whom is this 'simple'? In the traditional complicity of the household, such 'simple recipes' often become the optimal expression for men playing the role of 'helping out' in the kitchen. He can execute the mechanical steps from 1 to 3 and declare himself a participant in making dinner, while the tedious, invisible preparation and cleanup—not counted in the 'Total Time: 25 minutes'—remain structurally assigned to women. This narrative decouples the result (the dish) from the process (the maintenance), allowing the executor to claim the identity of 'cooking' while comfortably ignoring the unpaid labor behind it.

The most ironic part is the comment section's discussion on substitutions, performing a kind of aesthetic freedom. They fail to realize that this worship of 'convenience' is itself a form of discipline. It tells us that life should be quantified into minutes and steps, and that the unquantifiable, real experience of care and toil is nonexistent in the Sheet-Pan logic. This erasure of labor is the most covert disguise of meta-violence in the private sphere.
