Consent as a Cognitive Privilege

Consent is merely a definition of identity imposed by the powerful upon the voiceless.

This film exposes a brutal node of Structural Violence: does a body still belong to its owner once cognitive capacity is gone? The law and morality here fall into a classic masculine-centric narrative paradox—demanding absolute consent, while simultaneously decreeing that if you lack the 'capacity to understand sex,' your apparent enjoyment is legally irrelevant.

At its core, this is a game of definition. With Leslie’s dementia, she loses the ability to assert her subjectivity, turning her body into a vacuum. Martin’s 'love' becomes his optimal expression, while Amanda’s 'protection' becomes another form of power intervention. Leslie herself remains the ultimate object. The irony is that the law, in attempting to protect the vulnerable via 'cognitive capacity,' exercises Meta Violence—it presumes only pleasure backed by 'rationality' is valid, stripping biological pleasure of its legitimacy.

Many will fall for the sentimental scam of 'love vs. crime.' Instead, we must ask: in a legal system designed by men, how is the body of a non-verbal, non-cognitive woman tossed between the narratives of 'love' and 'protection'? When Leslie initiates contact, is it a primal expression from behind her biological wall, or a conditioned performance internalized over a lifetime?

The film offers no solace, which is its only honest trait. In the current structure, there is no optimal expression. A woman who loses her cognition is destined to lose the final right of interpretation over her own body, caught in the complicity of law and family.
