Counterculture is a Scam, and 'Intellectualism' is the Perfect Cover

When expression is quantified by metrics, the 'underground' is merely a reserve army for the mainstream.

Sofie Royer is a textbook example of the glamorized 'intellectual' artist. Her expression is a dense collage of Jstor databases, Tarkovsky, and Dadaism. To the mainstream media, this is erudition; to me, it is simply another form of identity politics—using cultural symbols to construct class barriers. By calling 'referencing' the coolest thing one can do, she is essentially establishing a pricing power over meaning through a 'secret code' accessible only to a specific elite.

Her distaste for female-only DJ nights and her longing for an 'apolitical structure' reveal a profound cognitive blind spot. The desire for a-political purity is a luxury. Only those who are not oppressed at the structural layer have the privilege to demand the removal of politics from art. For the Primal Race, existence itself is political. She argues that gender and heritage shouldn't be a USP, forgetting that her ability to make this argument stems from an internalized masculine-centric narrative—the delusion that 'talent' can exist independently of power structures.

She laments that everything countercultural is doomed, feeling a 'bummer' as Boiler Room scales up via capital. This is naive. Counterculture was never meant to 'win'; it is a weaponized cognitive entry point. Capital doesn't fear the underground; it consumes it, turning rebellion into a consumable label of 'cool.' When she sings about being 'too pop for the art world, too indie for the mainstream,' she has found her optimal expression: playing the role of the 'underrated genius.'

This performance is safe. It allows her to avoid the actual existential war, opting instead to maintain an elegant sense of failure while smoking slim cigarettes in a Vienna apartment, treating her heart as a script for an audition. True counterculture is the dismantling of meta-violence, not searching for a leading part within the metaphors of 35mm film and 4K restoration.
