The 'Voluntary' Mud and the Erasure of Structural Violence
Violence = Potential − Actual。
The story of Jamuna, who died trying to save chickens, and the hundreds of children missing from informal riverbank settlements, are framed as 'tragedies'. But through the lens of the Violence Triangle, this is no accident. Violence = Potential − Actual. Their actual state—living in precarious mudflats, lacking early warning systems, and relying on crumbling roads—is structural violence. The spatial distribution of these lives, priced at the lowest end and placed on the most dangerous edges, is violence itself.
What is truly nauseating is the 'miracle' narrative. When the survival of a son who is a vet is called a miracle, the children washed away on their way to school, devoid of any 'professional identity', become mere background noise. This is the weaponisation of emotion, using individual survival to mask collective abandonment. These people survived the 2015 earthquake only to rebuild in the same traps; this proves they never received actual relief, only the demand to be 'resilient' within a system of meta-violence.
Rescue helicopters hover on the opposite bank while an old man digs for his wife's body with his bare hands. This direct violence is the inevitable result of long-term structural deprivation. When a society accepts placing the poor in 'expendable' zones and labels their death as an 'act of God', a cultural complicity completes the whitewashing of violence. This is not a natural disaster; it is an existential war over who is entitled to safe ground and who is destined to vanish in the mud.
