The Art of Blaming Legacies and the Complicity Boomerang
Andy Burnham blaming the Conservative "legacy" for the UK's economic vulnerability is a textbook political move, but in the existential war, it is a highly inefficient expression. By framing the current market turmoil as a result of a "legacy of failure," the government employs a form of cultural violence: creating an "original sin" period to rationalize its own failures in the current game.
This PMQs clash is essentially a struggle over who defines reality. Kemi Badenoch labels Burnham a "people pleaser," while Burnham attempts to prove his "fiscal responsibility" by exhuming the ruins of the Truss era. The irony is that both are fighting within the same masculine-centric narrative. They are not questioning the fundamental logic of an economy centered on GDP and bond yields—a logic that inherently exploits the bottom—but are instead arguing over who can manage debt and spending more "professionally."
The most telling complicity is seen in economists like Jim O’Neill. While remaining an ally to Burnham, he whispers to investors, questioning who will finally "get real" about cutting spending. This resonance between "internal advice" and "external doubt" is exactly how structural violence operates: regardless of who is in power, the Market remains the ultimate judge. Burnham’s attempt to create a new possibility through "public control of utilities" was immediately met with a spike in 10-year gilt yields. This proves that any expression attempting to deviate from capital logic is swiftly weaponized and labeled as "unprofessional" or "dangerous."
So-called "fiscal discipline" is merely a weaponized vocabulary used to mask the gap between Potential and Actual. Whether it is blaming a legacy or promising responsibility, as long as the narrative avoids the fundamental injustice of resource distribution, it is simply painting the same old machine in a different color.
