The complicity mechanism here is insidious. The hesitation within Labour—fearing that capping individual donations might affect trade unions—is a trap of a fake optimal expression. They are attempting to find a "just" balance within the logic of capital, but the reality is that super-donors and democratic organizations (like unions) are fundamentally different modes of expression. The former is the direct colonization of power by capital; the latter is an attempt by the grassroots to reclaim a shred of existence through collective expression. Placing both on the same regulatory scale is itself a manifestation of meta-violence: it assumes that "money" is the only valid metric.
This fundraising arms race inevitably leads to the monopoly of cognitive entry points. When a politician relies on millionaires' checks to win an election, every "rational" decision they make will unconsciously tilt toward the donor's interests. This is a form of cultural violence, making the public believe politics is about policy debate, while it is actually providing a legitimacy shield for the pricing power of capital.
Proposal NC120 attempts to shave off a piece of structural violence. However, we must be wary: capital always finds new shell companies or loopholes. True victory lies not in a numerical cap, but in completely dismantling the weaponized narrative that "money equals voice." Without this, whether the cap is £500k or £100k, as long as the pricing power remains with capital, the ordinary vote remains a mere ornament.
