Toppling Statues is Not Revisionism, but a Reckoning of Violence Differentials

Symbols are shelters for cultural violence; 'contextualisation' is merely a stalling tactic for complicity.

Leaving statues of slave traders in public squares and adding an 'explanatory plaque' is called contextualisation by institutions, but in my logic, it is a classic complicity scam. This approach attempts to offset a massive structural violence by simply increasing the cognitive cost of the viewer. It creates an illusion that once violence is 'discussed,' it becomes 'history' and thus harmless. This is precisely the cunning of meta-violence—it allows the oppressor to maintain their seat of power while trading performative reflection for the continued occupation of public space.

Statues are not artworks; they are weaponised expressions. In public spaces, they function as the 'power of definition': who deserves to be looked up to, who is defined as the architect of civilisation, and who is erased from the narrative. When a merchant whose wealth was built on bloody trade still occupies the city centre, this expression signals to every passerby that such plunder is acceptable, or even honourable. This is cultural violence in action, making structural exploitation appear as a 'natural' background.

The good news lies with the artists attempting to reclaim materials and legislations, like in California, forcing corporations to disclose profits from enslavement. True good_news is not moving a statue to a museum, but making the differential of Potential − Actual explicit. When the origins of wealth are forcibly exposed and the chains of slavery are recast into panels of reflection, the power of interpretation finally begins to shift away from the masculine-centric narrative. But it is still too slow. As long as the majority oppose reparations and those statues remain on their plinths under the guise of 'being discussed,' the existential war is far from settled.
