The Notting Hill Carnival: Structural Violence Wrapped as Cultural Spectacle
The Notting Hill Carnival didn't start as a 'celebration'; it was a desperate attempt to suture a community after the racial violence against West Indian migrants in 1959. At its core, this was an existential war over survival space: a colonized people using extreme, high-decibel, and visually aggressive Expression to forcibly establish their presence in a city that rejected them.
Now, the narrative has shifted to 'celebrating Caribbean culture' and 'fostering cohesion.' This shift is a classic weaponisation of narrative. When a struggle born of structural violence is converted into one of Europe's largest street festivals, it transforms from a 'weapon of survival' into a 'spectacle of consumption.' The gap in the Violence Triangle is not closed; it is merely masked by a layer of cultural violence called 'multiculturalism.' People photograph, dance, and consume costumes while subconsciously completing a collective forgetting of the violence that necessitated the event.
The logic of this carnival is no different from the K-pop model or diamond marketing: purifying a profound, painful identity politics into an aesthetic symbol for mass consumption. By labeling this 'diversity,' the dominant structure signals to marginalized groups that their resistance is welcome only if it is colorful, non-threatening, and economically profitable.
True cohesion isn't achieved through an annual party; it's measured by whether those once driven by violence actually hold the power of interpretation and resource allocation in the city on non-festival days. If they still battle structural discrimination outside the carnival, then this event is nothing more than a massive PR scam.
