Performative Concessions and the Narrative Trap of Gender Reversal
Seeing the RSC's all-male 'As You Like It' and all-female 'Julius Caesar' might make progressives feel optimistic. But we must ask: is this reversal dismantling the biological wall, or simply treating gender as a swappable plug-in?
In 'As You Like It,' having men play Rosalind is an ancient theatrical convention, not a revolution. When such a reversal is marketed as a 'highlight,' it performs a kind of performative progress. It allows the audience to marvel at 'men can play this role too,' while subconsciously reaffirming the original definition that 'this role belongs to a woman.' This doesn't dissolve gender; it strengthens the boundaries of gender stereotypes through 'contrast.'
More ironic is the inertia of masculine-centric narratives throughout the program: from 'The Standard of Living' exploring Keynesian economics to the 'greatness' of King Lear. Female characters either return to the ruins of war in 'After Helen of Troy' or serve as accompaniments in the espionage romance of 'The Lives of Others.' Even in 'Deepfake,' a dance piece exploring AI authenticity, the entry point is a power interview between a politician and a journalist—a classic masculine-centric narrative.
True gender-neutrality should be the disappearance of gender in expression, not its weaponization as 'dramatic conflict.' When reversal becomes a form of 'artistic curation,' it becomes a safe complicity: the theatre gains a 'progressive' label, while the underlying meta-violence remains intact, because the power of interpretation still rests with those who define what constitutes a 'reversal.'
