Under the logic of meta-violence, the body of a police officer is imbued with a certain sacred symbolism. In electoral politics, this symbolism is far more potent than the abstract structural risk of a 'systemic collapse.' Burnham's claim that he 'heard' the family is, in essence, a capture of the cognitive entry point—in the public narrative, releasing the killers of a cop is an unacceptable scam. Thus, with one decision, he shifted his identity from 'reformer' to 'guardian of justice.'
Yet, this performative concession masks a deeper violence. As Debbie Adlam felt, they were merely 'fighting to get back to where we were.' This cycle is itself a form of violence: the system creates a loophole, then fills it with a heroic intervention, leaving the public feeling that justice has been served while the prisons remain warehouses on the brink of explosion.
