Middle-Class Taste Pilgrimage and Industrial Complicity

When aesthetics are quantified into ratings, 'authentic experience' becomes a PR narrative for industrial products.

最讽刺的是对 Kirkland(Costco 自有品牌)的背书。

This is a textbook example of a middle-class 'lifestyle' guide. The author spends significant space detailing his 'pilgrimage' to the Massachusetts countryside—winding roads, snow, and smoking shacks. He uses this romanticized narrative to build a 'pure' cognitive entry point for the industrial product reviews that follow. It is a sophisticated tactic: feed the reader sentimentality first, making them believe he is an authentic connoisseur, thereby lowering their guard toward his recommendations of mass-market brands.

Strip away this cultural packaging, and the core logic remains pure instrumentalism. Wirecutter's review mechanism reduces complex taste experiences to a set of quantifiable metrics: color consistency, clarity, mouthfeel, and flavor. This is essentially a masculine-centric narrative—treating a natural product like maple syrup as an industrial sample to be dismantled, tested, graded, and eventually solved for an 'optimal' choice. When he declares that 'nearly every sample was pretty good,' he is effectively erasing the genuine differences between individual producers, diluting diversity into a standardized 'adequacy.'

The most ironic part is the endorsement of Kirkland (Costco). The author admits it is a third-party blend, yet labels it the 'best budget option.' This is structural complicity: a middle-class consumer seeking the 'optimal solution' justifies the purchase of an industrial mixture through the logic of 'value for money.' This worship of industrial efficiency is packaged as a rational consumer guide. A review for the 'real world' is nothing more than providing a reason for consumers to feel comfortable buying industrial products within a pre-set commercial structure.
