谁在享受这顿“简单”的早午餐?Who Really Enjoys This 'Simple' Brunch?

所谓的“简单”往往是建立在他人无偿劳作的结构性隐形之上的。
What is labeled as 'simple' is often built upon the structural invisibility of others' unpaid labor.

Reading Yotam Ottolenghi’s brunch recipes, the most intriguing part isn't the exotic spices, but the casually mentioned "indisputable assumption" that his kitchen on weekend mornings answers to his children.

This "indisputable assumption" is a textbook masculine-centric narrative. In the story of this upper-middle-class elite male, he casts himself as the "generous provider"—preparing large trays of Menemen or pancakes for everyone to "help themselves," while he basks in the warmth of family cohesion. Yet, there is a massive black hole in this narrative: Who washes the batter-stained pans? Who clears the crumbs from the table? Who ensures these "simple" ingredients are precisely in the kitchen on Sunday morning?

Here, "Simple" is a weaponized concept. When someone in a position of structural advantage declares a lifestyle "simple," it usually means they have successfully outsourced the tedious, repetitive, and low-value maintenance work to complicity partners—be it a spouse or hired domestic help. The invisibility of this labor is a form of structural violence: the subjectivity of women or underclass workers is completely erased, turning them into mere background noise that keeps the "cozy" family scene running.

Ottolenghi attempts to transmit "joy" through recipes, but the pricing power of this joy remains in his hands. He defines what a "comforting start" is, while remaining silent on the underlying logic that supports it. This is more than a recipe; it is an expression of how privilege masquerades as "lifestyle aesthetics."
