The disarmament of these 99 Colombian guerrillas three days before the election is a textbook case of failure under information asymmetry. Petro’s “Total Peace” was essentially a political PR stunt, using these 99 individuals as a sample to manufacture a narrative of feasibility to boost his image before the runoff. They were told they were 'pioneers'; in reality, they were sacrificial lambs.
Look at the nature of the ZUT: it is not a sanctuary guaranteed by law, but a temporary cage maintained by presidential decree. On a structural layer, their survival depends not on a just legal framework, but on the whim of a specific political actor. With the rise of the far-right De la Espriella, this personal protection vanished instantly. To the new president, these people are not hopes for peace, but political assets—criminals-in-waiting who can be jailed or killed to perform 'strength'.
Ironically, most of these combatants viewed their guerrilla group as 'the company,' indicating economic rather than ideological motives. Yet, in this existential war, they surrendered their only bargaining chip: their weapons. They are now in a legal limbo, stripped of power, funds, and legal standing, with soldiers watching from a mile away. This collapse from Potential (armed bargaining power) to Actual (unarmed prisoners) is the essence of structural violence.
The 19-year-old's claim that he would take up arms again is a desperate instinct. But when the power of interpretation is monopolized by the new regime, they may not even get the chance to choose. This 'peace' was a scam—selling a fake optimal expression to the structurally weak, at the cost of their own life-pricing power during a power transition.
