Consumed 'Authenticity' and the Gaze on Traditional Women

The so-called 'hidden gems' are aesthetic colonies of the middle class, where traditional women serve as mere scenery.

This typical travel feature from The Guardian is essentially a weaponisation of 'taste'. By defining what is 'unsung', it constructs an elite aesthetic that distinguishes itself from the 'package crowds'. In this narrative, remoteness and wildness are packaged as a sophisticated 'escape', but this escape is built upon the objectifying gaze of local lifestyles.

The most disturbing detail appears in the description of Karpathos, Greece: the author praises a village 'frozen in time', specifically noting that 'older women still in traditional dress' are drying pasta. Here, the existence of these women is reduced to an exotic ornament. Their traditional clothing and arduous manual labor are not seen as hardships of survival, but as 'pure' scenery for the tourist. This expression erases their subjectivity, turning them into a backdrop for a middle-class holiday checklist.

This is a textbook case of cultural violence. Using the sugar-coating of romanticism or naturalism, it masks a structural power imbalance. While travelers reap the psychological dividends of 'escaping the noise', the locals—especially the women defined as 'traditional'—become unconscious accomplices in this aesthetic complicity. Their lives are priced as 'authentic', and the power to set that price remains firmly with the external observers who hold the cameras and define what is 'beautiful'.
