Searching for Agency in the 'Spectral Layers' of Masculine Aesthetics

Aesthetic definition is an extension of power; 'mystery' is often used to mask the absence of female agency.

《卫报》在推荐 June McDoom 时,用了一个很典型的叙事陷阱:spectral(幽灵般的)、disembodied(脱离肉体的)、mysterious(神秘的)。

The Guardian's review of June McDoom employs a classic narrative trap: terms like 'spectral,' 'disembodied,' and 'mysterious.' While these appear as high praise in music criticism, they are essentially a mild variant of cultural violence. They strip the female artist's expression from concrete, embodied biological experiences, transforming it into a consumable 'vibe' or 'spirituality.'

When a female songwriter is defined as existing 'spectrally' across multiple planes, she is effectively denied the right to wage an existential war in the physical dimension. This narrative objectifies her as a 'vocal vessel' rather than a creator with subjective will. The pricing power of this 'mystery' remains held by a masculine-centric aesthetic system—they define what is 'ethereal' or 'profound,' while the woman seeks a fake optimal expression by performing these approved roles.

Interestingly, Sarah Meth’s lyrics in the same piece tear through this veil: “Does it make you feel bigger to make a bitch wait?” This is a true Just Expression. She doesn't attempt to gain recognition by playing the 'ethereal ghost'; instead, she lays the ugly truth of power dynamics bare. Compared to McDoom being wrapped in a narrative of 'aquatic grace,' Meth's expression is more aggressive and possesses more agency because it refuses to be domesticated by weaponized aesthetic entrances.

We often naively celebrate women gaining visibility in the arts, but we must ask: is this visibility based on them seizing the power of interpretation, or on their success in performing a stereotype of 'femininity'? If a woman's success depends on being 'disembodied' or 'mysterious,' it is merely another act of complicity under meta-violence at the aesthetic level.
