The DSA's reaction is equally telling. The organization continued to call her a 'member' in 2020 and 2024, a textbook example of Complicity. Both parties maintained a symbiotic illusion for years: the DSA needed AOC's visibility, and AOC needed the radical label provided by the DSA. The crack only appeared in 2024 over the Palestine issue, but the crack isn't fatal. In the game of power, labels can be repurchased and repaired.
This 'rejoining' exposes the Weaponisation of political narratives. The so-called 'socialist project' has become a subscription service that can be renewed at any time. When a politician treats identity as a tool rather than a manifestation of subjectivity, she is performing a role for short-term gain. This 'false Optimal Expression' costs her subjectivity but wins her a seat of power. For AOC, the trade-off is incredibly profitable.
