This settlement is essentially an act of complicity. The government checks its political KPI boxes with a flashy number, while Meta buys its way out of an independent audit of its underlying logic. Together, they downgrade a systemic public health crisis into a trivial issue of individual 'time management.' Without independent oversight, this so-called 'victory' is nothing more than an expensive band-aid on a hemorrhaging wound.
Most ironic is Meta's spokesperson claiming the 'huge value' teens derive from the platform. In the masculine-centric narrative of meta-violence, this 'value' usually refers to objectified social currency and a fake sense of existence fed by algorithms. As long as the predatory mechanism remains, all safety settings are merely a fresh coat of paint on a cage.
