Before attaining power, supporting a donations cap was the lowest-cost expression—it attracted reformers, activists, and voters, manufacturing a progressive narrative of 'cleaning up Westminster.' But once in office, this expression shifted from a 'vote-getting tool' to a 'power obstacle.'
What we see here is a blatant act of complicity. The trade unions, as Labour's mega-donors, lobbied Burnham directly: don't touch our wallets. Burnham's response was instantaneous: drop the support. This proves that in the political ecosystem, so-called 'democratic trust' is worthless compared to actual funding chains. For Burnham, maintaining complicity with big donors secures his power far more effectively than keeping promises to activists.
Most ironic is Stella Creasy's compromise. By attempting to lower the cap to 'placate' unions, she is engaging in another form of complicity—trying to maintain the illusion of 'making progress' without disturbing the power core. This incremental change is merely a PR version of structural violence; it gives the public the illusion of reform while reinforcing the established order where politics is for sale.
In this narrative, the voices of ordinary people are defined as 'secondary,' while the interests of donors are 'prioritized.' This is how meta-violence operates: by defining 'priorities,' it legitimizes the monopoly of power by money and frames this monopoly as a rational decision to 'avoid unintended consequences.'
