In the narrative of the indie sleaze era, substance abuse and emotional instability were labeled as 'decadence,' 'rebellion,' or 'artistic temperament.' The brilliance of this cultural violence lies in transforming direct violence into an aesthetic symbol, allowing the perpetrator—surrounded by complicity—to dissolve crimes like abusing pregnant women and stealing passports into a 'chaotic lifestyle.'
Note the term: debauched behaviour. While labels and fans praised this 'wildness,' they were actually collaborating in a meta violence—a masculine-centric narrative where male loss of control is seen as a 'side effect of genius,' while female suffering is presupposed as the necessary backdrop for such creation. Victims were objectified as tools for funding drug habits and folded into sofa beds, while this extreme dominance enjoyed a pathological immunity under the guise of 'rock and roll.'
The record label's swift severance is not an act of conscience, but risk management. When violence can no longer be packaged as 'art' and begins to damage commercial value, the complicit turn. However, this doesn't hide the fact that before these women spoke out, the entire indie industry provided the cognitive entry points and living space for this power abuse based on gender hierarchy.
