This is a textbook escalation of Direct Violence. Arson, murder, and critical injuries are rapidly wrapped in a narrative entry point called 'organised crime'. In the lexicon of the police and officials, these are no longer individual deaths, but a grand war of 'fighting crime'. Under this narrative, the individuality of the deceased is erased; they become collateral damage in a game of underground power dynamics.
Notice the linkage of this narrative: the tragedy on the A66 last week killed two officers, and this week is a house fire. The police response is to 'continue to disrupt' criminal organisations. A complicity field is formed here—the state violence apparatus, by defining isolated incidents as 'organised crime', successfully upgrades random or structural violence into a 'necessary war'. Once violence is labeled as 'gangs' or 'syndicates', public attention is diverted toward a longing for order, rather than questioning the mechanism of violence itself.
Most disturbing is the Meta Violence inherent in this. In a masculine-centric policing narrative, violence is simplified into a clash between 'strongmen' (police vs. criminal organisations), while the specific bodies burned in fires or crushed in collisions become mere backdrops for this masculine power game. Who are the complicitors? The system that justifies heavy-handed enforcement by 'organising' violence to mask systemic failure, and the narrators repeating this logic in the media. Together, they reprice violence: as long as it is for 'protecting the community', individual death is explained away as an inevitable cost.
