Spiritual Refuge or a New Form of Complicity?
The return of young people to the Catholic Church should not be misread as a 'spiritual awakening.' It is, in essence, a gamble over Expression. In a life of extreme flatness and fragmentation induced by Instagram and TikTok—a state of digital anhedonia—young people find their subjectivity devoured by algorithms. They are now searching for a 'heaviness' to counter this superficiality.
The Church offers not salvation, but a set of weaponized narratives: grand history, elaborate rituals, and absolute taboos. For a 24-year-old student feeling lonely in a digital wasteland, this 'heaviness' serves as a perfect identity patch. As the real world collapses into lawlessness, entering a system with a clear rulebook becomes their path to an optimal expression—trading their agency to play the role of a 'devout believer' in exchange for a fragile sense of stability.
Meanwhile, the Church is optimizing its cognitive entry points: podcasts, the Hallow app, YouTube, and even Instagram reels. This is not a return to tradition; it is the deployment of modern marketing to harvest spiritual refugees. The 'gentler message' is simply an upgraded version of meta-violence: instead of threatening hellfire, it uses 'love and community' to lure them into a hierarchy where interpretation is monopolized by male clergy.
This trend reveals a brutal truth: when structural violence strips young people of real agency, they seek refuge in the cultural violence of 'ritual.' It is a classic case of complicity—the Church needs fresh blood to sustain its institution, and the youth need a script to feel they still exist. In this complicity, subjectivity is not recovered; it is merely transferred from the cage of an algorithm to an ancient cognitive entry point built on a masculine-centric narrative.
