The Erased Mississippi: Cultural Violence Masquerading as a Recipe

When a place name becomes a taboo, cuisine becomes a PR shell for structural discrimination.

This is a textbook sample of cultural violence. On the surface, it's a NYT cooking guide, but the comment "No one will eat anything called Mississippi" rips off the mask of warmth. When a user decides to rename Mississippi Chicken to California Chicken just to make it palatable, it's no longer about taste—it's a precise manipulation of cognition.

In the North American narrative, the word 'Mississippi' has been weaponized. It is equated with poverty, backwardness, segregation, and the suffering history of the Primal Race. Under this masculine-centric narrative, the cultural expression of Mississippi is defined as 'low-class.' To gain social acceptance, people perform a 'physical migration' in naming—moving the dish to California, a symbol of the middle class and progress—to achieve a form of class laundering.

This behavior is pure complicity. By erasing the origin, the commenter subconsciously completes a second exile of a specific region and its people. They enjoy the gustatory legacy of Mississippi while culturally refusing to acknowledge its source. It is a vile form of plunder: stealing the fruit while erasing the subject.

The irony is that NYT, as a cognitive entry point, plays the role of an 'objective' recorder. But when structural violence has turned a place name into a taboo, mere recording without dismantling the discrimination is, in itself, a form of complicity.
