Unable to access power through legitimate social paths, these youths weaponized their expression—turning the A66 highway into a battlefield and police cars into props. They weren't seeking an optimal solution for survival, but a performative 'toughness.'
The irony lies in the reward system at the cultural layer: social media algorithms amplify the thrill, and public attention, even in retrospect, reinforces the 'outlaw' narrative. When a 17-year-old believes driving the wrong way on a highway is a 'cool' expression, he has lost his subjectivity, becoming a disposable pawn in the logic of patriarchal violence.
Government talk of 'tough action' is merely the structural violence attempting a habitual patch after a burst of direct violence. As long as the narrative equating 'aggression' with 'power' remains intact, banning a few apps won't stop the next group of youths from seeking their pre-defined identities in the speed of death.
