Urban Noise and the Complicity of 'Politeness'

Politeness is a defensive weapon for the structurally advantaged; noise is a fragment of existential gaming.

The article discusses a typical urban noise issue, but Dan Hancox captures a crucial dimension: who is making the noise and what it signifies. He distinguishes between the 'sodcasting' of 2010 (teens playing music) and today's 'loudcasting' (adults blasting reels or speakerphone calls).

From my perspective, this is a game of claiming public space. The early teen sodcasting was a necessary claiming of space by marginalized groups. In an era suppressed by the 'respect agenda', noise was a low-cost expression, a form of existential war to announce their presence. Today's 'loudcasting' is entirely different; it is driven by adults who already hold seats in the social structure. This isn't about establishing identity; it's pure individualistic arrogance. They assume the attention of others is a resource to be freely occupied, turning public transit into a private living room.

The irony lies in the proposed solutions: 'nudging' and 'social consensus'. 'Politeness' and 'civility' often serve as covers for complicity. When the structurally advantaged blast AI monkey videos in public, the disadvantaged are expected to endure it through 'politeness' or wait for gentle guidance. This is a manifestation of meta violence: the power to define what constitutes a 'nuisance' is held by those most skilled at performing civility.

所谓的 'gentle persuasion' is simply maintaining a status quo that avoids conflict. When an adult feels entitled to loudcast on a train, they have already won a subconscious game: they know that in a system complicit in politeness, most people will not employ direct violence to stop them. This 'civilized' atmosphere is precisely the camouflage for the arrogant.
