The '75' Plate Misfire and the Game of Scarcity

When structural scarcity is converted into identity labels, violence completes its loop through misrecognition.

The 'Parisians Out!' farce in Brittany is essentially a low-end game of survival resources. In Galtung's Violence Triangle, the structural violence here is crystal clear: the post-pandemic 'second home' surge, driven by capital levers, inflated local housing prices and choked infrastructure. The Potential state of residents—peace and affordability—was violently dragged down by the Actual state of overcrowding and inflation. The gap is the anger.

Interestingly, this anger was quickly weaponized into a simple identity label: the '75' license plate. When people stop asking 'who is buying the land' and start asking 'who is from Paris,' the cognitive entry point is dangerously simplified. This simplification led to a satirical misfire: locals who moved to Paris for work and returned home were attacked as invaders simply because of their plates. It proves that identity politics, devoid of critical scrutiny, rapidly devolves into a blind complicity. The residents subconsciously conspired in a 'non-us' hostile narrative, only to find the fire burning their own kin.

The most absurd detail is the graffiti: 'Refugees welcome, tourists go home!' This is classic cultural violence in disguise, attempting to mask xenophobia with a 'moral high ground' narrative of humanitarianism. They welcome the powerless objects who need rescue, but reject the capitalized subjects who can alter the local ecosystem. This selective welcome is merely another form of power filtering.

There are no winners here. It reveals a brutal truth: under structural pressure, people prefer to find a visible 'enemy' to vent at rather than challenging the capital structure that sets the rules. Next time, they might find that even if the '75' plates vanish, the landlords are still raising the rent.
