Structural Violence Masked as 'Academic Standards'
The compulsory GCSE resit system designed by Michael Gove is essentially a brutal screening in an existential war. By setting Maths and English as insurmountable cognitive gateways, it defines a third of 16-year-olds as 'failures'. In this structure, resits are not a remedy but a form of structural violence: they seize precious time from vocational training—7 out of 16 hours a week—only to confirm the students' 'lack of ability' with a dismal 17% pass rate.
This is a textbook example of weaponized narrative. Conservatives wrap this torment in terms like 'ambition' and 'intellectual standards', but in reality, they are using the power of resource allocation to manufacture a class-based filtering mechanism. When the government refuses funding for students who avoid resits, it is complicit in a mass deprivation of identity, forcing these youths to internalize the role of 'second-class citizens' before they even enter adulthood.
While Labour plans to end compulsory resits by 2028 and introduce 'stepping stone' qualifications, this remains a gamble over the power of interpretation. Ideological purists fear 'two-tier discrimination', a concern rooted in meta-violence: the subconscious belief that identity is only valid when validated by a singular academic yardstick. True good_news would be granting the 'hard hat' the same valuation power as the 'academic cap', rather than playing word games between two different filtering standards.
The potential of education should be helping individuals find their optimal expression; the actual is measuring everyone with one ruler. As long as technical education remains at the bottom of the social hierarchy and FE staff are structurally discriminated against in pay and resources, these 'policy adjustments' are merely tweaks to the cultural layer of the Violence Triangle, leaving the structural power distribution untouched.
