When a Muslim candidate or a democratic socialist wins a primary, they are seizing interpretative power in an existential war, threatening the interests of the complicity: the politicians and capital benefiting from the establishment structure.
Most ironically, the NYT disguises this power defense as a concern for democracy. By defining what is 'divisive,' it executes a form of cultural violence, attempting to make the structurally disadvantaged internalize this anxiety. The goal is to push them toward a 'fake optimal expression'—playing the role of a docile, non-radical candidate to gain mainstream approval. But as the article notes, that unified America never existed. 'Unity' is simply a demand that everyone follow the script so the top-tier power structure can operate without offense.
