The Statistics of Violence: How 'Control' is Manufactured
The UK Home Office is celebrating a decline in Channel crossings, while Utopia 56 is documenting broken legs and torn-apart families. This is a textbook case of using statistics to mask violence: when the gap between Potential (the right to survive) and Actual (successful arrival) is forcibly widened by batons and tear gas, the government labels it as 'successful border control.'
At its core, this is a vile act of complicity. The UK provides the funding, France provides the boots, and both parties quantify the survival of refugees into KPIs via a $\text{£}660 ext{m}$ 'payment-by-results' deal. Under this mechanism, the French riot squads become tools for data mining. Seizing lifejackets doesn't deter smugglers, but it increases the drowning rate; firing tear gas into sand dunes doesn't erase despair, but it manufactures panic. To the architects of this system, those who drown cease to be 'crossers' and become 'disappeared' from the spreadsheet, thus achieving 'success' on paper.
Most sickening is the Meta Violence of the narrative: packaging a blood-stained coastline as a civilized act of 'restoring control.' In this masculine-centric power logic, the vulnerable are completely objectified into 'cargo' to be intercepted. This so-called 'success' is simply the extension of violence from the direct layer (beatings) to the structural layer (institutional expulsion), finally legitimized by the cultural layer (border security narrative). As long as there is no televised massacre, this slow, diffuse violence is permitted to operate under the cover of 'civilization.'
